Greetings! It’s my pleasure to welcome you to the Hawthorne community!
Hawthorne is one of MMSD’s original Community Schools, with a long history of close cooperation and high support between Hawthorne and its community partners. Our Family and Community Engagement team is outstanding and I am very much looking forward to continuing the work they are doing. Hawthorne is committed to providing an anti-racist, equitable education that ensures all students feel seen, welcomed, and supported in our school. The wraparound support that being a Community School provides our students and families is one way Hawthorne commits to providing an equitable, holistic education for all students.
While being a Community School involves broader community-school partnerships, we will also live it out each day through open and consistent communication with our families. Developing a strong partnership with families in service to their students’ education is a crucial aspect of an effective learning community.
MMSD’s continued focus on a science of reading approach to literacy instruction will be another priority area. By teaching strategies for decoding words, we are giving our students the tools they need to be skilled readers and being a skilled reader empowers our learners to succeed in any future endeavor!
