Principal's Corner
Hello Hawthorne Families & Community!
On behalf of our entire Hawthorne Elementary Community School staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2022-23 school year. We look forward to partnering with you on behalf of all Hawthorne Dolphins to ensure a school year that is rewarding, meaningful and filled with much growth and learning for all Hawthorne learners.
Hawthorne school and MMSD district priorities are centered in 3 key areas: Academics, Culture & Climate, and Family & Community Engagement. At the elementary level in MMSD, we are excited to begin use of newly adopted literacy curricula: EL Language Arts from Open Up Resources & Benchmark Education, as well as new science materials Amplify Science. Students and teachers will be utilizing these new curricula beginning this 2022-23 school year.
As a Community School and a school that has always been community minded, we are eager to build community with each and all Hawthorne families and with our wider school community. The city of Madison is currently amidst a Hawthorne-Truax Neighborhood redevelopment plan. City leaders are partnering with the community and neighborhoods seeking input from all regarding the new plan. Also,a new housing project has been proposed by WHPC Wisconsin Housing Preservation Corporation and recently approved by the City of Madison for building at the former bakery site next door to Hawthorne. Exciting things are happening in our neighborhoods and community.
Hawthorne is honored to be a close partner with the EMCC - East Madison Community Center in Truax, a vibrant, thriving, neighborhood community center within walking distance of our school. We are also privileged to partner with and be supported by Madison Public Schools Foundation, an integral partner not only for Hawthorne, but all MMSD schools. From that partnership, we've had the outstanding privilege of developing close community partnerships with DEMCO, a Madison based supplier of equipment, furniture and supplies to libraries and schools, and the 1st United Methodist Church, FUMC. These tremendous community partners, and many more, impact our Hawthorne school community in countless ways throughout each school year.
Finally, we also have a terrific Hawthorne PTA - Parent Teacher Association. Check out our website here: Hawthorne PTA Join us for monthly meetings, monthly restaurant fundraiser nights supporting both our PTA & school & Madison east side businesses, and other exciting activities hosted throughout the school year.
We look forward to another great school year and partnering with you in support of our thriving Hawthorne Learning Community.
Sincerely,
Beth A Lehman
