New MMSD Athletics Program Preps Middle School Students for High School

With college basketball's March Madness as a backdrop, a brand-new athletics program is warming up at MMSD. This week, the MMSD Athletics Department kicked off athletic programming specifically for middle school students.

Offerings of cross country, wrestling, volleyball, cheerleading, and pom/dance are available to all 6-8th grade students, at no cost, providing instruction, information, and skill work to prepare participants for high school athletics. Each activity is held at the middle school’s feeder pattern high school, and led by high school coaches.

“Athletics support the development of commitment, reliability, honesty, integrity, accountability, and perseverance in each of our student-athletes,” MMSD Athletic Director Jeremy Schlitz said. “It’s never too early to learn these skills.”

While spots for all activities are nearly full, those interested should stay tuned for additional offerings; Schlitz hopes the program will continue to grow next year, expanding to include more sports and drawing in more students.

“The more equitable athletic programming opportunities we can provide for all our students, the more [they] can strive to become better students, athletes, leaders, and citizens,” Schlitz said.
